So much better than I expected February 7, 2003 Andrew Mogendorff (Minneapolis, MN United States) 94 out of 94 found this review helpful
I was given this CD by my brother for Christmas, as my wife and I were expecting a baby. I must admit to being cynical about it, having heard other arrangements of Beatles music in the past and the carnage which can so easily result. Although Jason Falkner's name on the package helped alleviate my fears. Before our son Toby was born, I listened to the CD a couple of times while repainting his room, and was pleasantly surprised. But it really comes into its own when listening to it at 2 in the morning, calming a baby (and parents) back to sleep. As you drift away, you can really feel the love and respect Falkner has for the music, and his arrangements are virtuosic in their understatement, beauty and gentleness. It's also a much better CD than most lullaby collections as there's not one bad or jarring track - while you're falling asleep you don't want to have to skip over that one song that you hate. So I apologise for my previous skepticism and wholeheartedly recommend this.
Magic, pure magic... May 14, 2002 C.S. (Cleveland, OH) 42 out of 45 found this review helpful
Everytime we play this CD (nightly!) it casts a magic spell over my child. There's really no other explanation. My son is 14 months old and does NOT want to go to bed, and even though he is forced to go by 9 p.m., he refuses to go quietly. We've tried many other tapes and CD's and such, but with no success. But - this CD is unlike the others! By the first few notes of the first song, I have total quiet and rapt attention. By the middle of the first song I have smiles and quiet humming along. By the end of the first song I have total relaxation and sleepy eyes. By the middle of the second song I have deep, blissful sleep. I lay him in his bed, he smiles, turns over, sleeps on. Magic... At first, my husband and I were concerned this would be "elevator" music, but it is not. It's simply instrumental arrangements of Beatles songs, and it's really lovely. We can't live without it now - it's a surefire way to get my baby to sleep at night without a fuss.
Accept no bedtime substitutes -- this is it! August 8, 2002 27 out of 28 found this review helpful
Chalk one up for all reviewers -- I bought this CD a week before the birth of my first child primarily because of the high marks given by my peers below. They were right. Falkner is an excellent musician who serves his audience's needs exquisitely; Bedtime With the Beatles is a masterpiece on all counts. Despite the heavy potential for awfulness in the premise -- string-heavy instrumental covers of Beatles songs in lullaby format -- Bedtime With the Beatles is not at all cheesy or muzak-y. Rather, Falkner produces a lush blanket of synths, guitar, bass and strings that is sweet and peaceful without a hint of cloyingness. The transition from one song to another (which if too abrupt, like on some CDs, can wake the baby) is quite peaceful, yet the songs manage to be diverse enough to keep both of us interested in the entire album after several dozen listens. The overall effect is of a finely crafted CD experience, slow but not plodding, full in range and tone, and familiar without reducing the original fine songs to something less than stellar. The baby has already learned that the first few notes of "Blackbird" mean naptime, and, thanks to the enclosed lyrics, I have finally learned the verses to "Mother Nature's Son" so I can sing along as she settles in. Both Willow Myla (4 weeks old) and I (a 29-year-old first-time parent) thank all of you out there who convinced us to buy this. If you're expecting and starting in-utero listening, or just had a baby and want to know which one CD to pick as "the" bedtime CD for the first few months, do yourself a favor and believe the hype!
Delightful November 19, 2001 michael gose (Malibu, CA USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Fantastic. Enjoyable. Delightful. Soothing. Nostalgic. Surprise. Pleasure. Although we found it in the Children's Section, we have listened to this cd repeatedly. The lullaby quality of the music is particularly reassuring. If you don't buy it for yourself, it also makes a perfect Baby Shower gift, Birthday gift, Christmas gift for any age. Could be paired up with the John Lennon children's stories for a particularly great gift combination. After the baby's asleep baby boomers might also want to put on the headphones. As Jason Falkner says in the liner notes: "it also sounds good at maximum volume."
Refreshing!! February 11, 2003 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
My 5 month old son & I love this CD! It is extremely relaxing for him and so refreshing for me! It's wonderful to listen to a lullaby CD that doesn't involve the same old songs! I happen to be a Beatles fan, but that is not a requirement to enjoy this CD. Jason Falkner does a wonderful job. I was a little nervous that I might regret this purchase. You know the whole "please don't ruin one of my favorite songs!" syndrome. But it has been quite the contrary! It is the best CD purchase I've made in a very long time! If you have a baby that needs lulled to sleep or just need to de-stress from a hard day....this is the CD to buy!!!
