Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Weezer, those geek rockers who topped mid-'90s charts with those oh-so-precious pop fables "Undone (The Sweater Song)" and "Buddy Holly," were almost undone by 1997's bombastic Pinkerton. Their sophomore release turned its back on the band's clean-cut debut, with a thrash approach more influenced by Sabbath and Kiss than the Beach Boys. On their third album (self-titled, like their first, but referred to as the "Green Album"), the band makes a concentrated effort to return to anthemic '60s punky pop, demonstrating that, for Weezer at least, it's rather easy being green. In fact, one could say they're almost as green as Green Day, especially on "Knockdown Dragout." At their best, Weezer show such boundless energy and gleeful aplomb that you'd swear you were listening to a lost Badfinger album. Conversely, Rivers Cuomo's twisted genius makes its way onto the anxious and paranoid "Hash Pipe" and the jittery "Glorious Days," making the "Green Album" the most absorbing and rounded vision from these pop masters yet. --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars Does modern rock get any more catchier than this?   August 4, 2001

Six years. Ten songs. An album whose entire length is 28:29? Say it ain't so, Weezer?

Truthfully, these tunes are excellent. In terms of pretty, catchy, guitar-griven pop songs, few have crafted better tunes than the boys from Weezer do here. At ten songs and 28 minutes, the album is quite short, but packs more hooks than some albums twice its length.

Pick a track, listen well, and enjoy. Tunes like "Don't Let Go", "Hash Pipe", and "Knock-down Drag-out" start out rocking and don't let up, and tracks which start more subdued like "Simple Pages", "Glorious Days", "Island in the Sun" and "O Girlfriend" eventually arrive there too with soaring, simple but memorable guitar solos and impeccable hooks. It's not rocket science, it's rock and roll, and Weezer has mastered the craft of catchy song-writing on this record as well as anyone.

This record seems out of place in the age of boy bands, self-involved rap rock, and standard corporate rock. It feels more of a throwback than anything with melodies that recall the Beatles or Buddy Holly (if they drenched their songs in distortion and feedback).

Definitely a stellar recording in a summer that has brought forth outstanding efforts from Tool, Stone Temple Pilots, and others, Weezer's latest demands to be heard. Easily among the best albums of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Crab if you wanna.....this CD really rocks!   June 27, 2001

First off, you cannot enjoy this album if you are too worried about it being able to live up to the Blue Album. This CD is a great progression for the band, mostly in the lyrics. Not as "geek-ish" as The Blue Album and not nearly as "techno-ish" as Pinkerton, The Green Album offers up 28 minutes of up-beat, self defying songs. Sure, the CD is really short, and that alone kind of made me wanting more by the end of my first listen, but after the second listen, you will be hooked. All the songs on here are perfect. "Photograph" is my favorite song, a song Rivers wrote about all of his failed relationships and about how to do things on his own, rather than depending on someone else, and that is pretty much the basis of this whole album. It isn't shy or awkward, instead, this album is fully self-aware and is brimming with confidence. The most noteworthy moments are Photograph, Don't Let Go, Glorious Day, Crab and Island in the Sun. Please, try to enjoy this album. There aren't many great bands left these days and the music scene seems to get worse every year. Cherish this album, because you know in 5 years nothing will compare to it.

5 out of 5 stars Short but sweet   May 25, 2001

I won't blab about how terse this record is, except that I find that it may be the only REAL argument against the CD. Realize that NO CD has everything you want (well, maybe Pinkerton :) but that some CDs sacrifice certain elements in attempt to refine and perfect others. In my opinion, weezer has done this flawlessly with the Green Album.

I believe the reason that there are mainly 1 and 5 star reviews is because the CD was anticipated greatly, meaning some people are REALLY ..., and others really happy. When I first listened to the CD, however, I felt the CD was lacking; I thought tracks 5-10 were just weak. And ..., in some ways they are (i.e., guitar solos, simple structure, no Matt Sharp, etc. etc. Also, Glorious Day and O GF have VERY similar intros). I guess that I was listening for a certain "something" that I expected from weezer, and it wasn't there.

Funny how things change over time. And honestly, it's only been since the 15th of May for me, and my opinion has changed from a 2-3 star review to a 4.5 (well, I'm an optimist so I round up ;). Somehow the simplicity of this album turned out to be a GOOD thing, which is surprising considering how the complexity of Pinkerton made it great. Who would think this band could produce two CDs which are so different, and yet great?

I will say that I am a huge weezer fan, and this makes me biased to a great degree. I read an article at some place which says that new N'Sync song "Pop" is THE greatest pop song ever; I think it's a terrible song. Goes to show what my opinion is worth, or for that matter, what ANYONE's opinion is worth. So what it comes down to is what YOU like: if you're *considering* buying the CD, then here's my take on the album: a lively and inspiring collection of tunes, with a variety of music, and always fun to sing along to. If you're into FUN music and not just depressing music (I'm into both kinds) then definitely purchase this CD.

Weezer's third album is a collection of 10 catchy pop/rock tunes. I would say 9 out of 10 of the songs are awesome the only track that doesn't stand out as much from the others would be "Knock-down Drag-Out." While all the rest are amazing. "Don't Let Go" and "Photograph" demand to be sung along to. You can't stand still during the hard rocking "Hash Pipe" and you can't help but mellow out to the smooth "Island in the Sun". "O Girlfriend" is also one of the finest tracks Weezer has ever produced. While this album is not the exposed raw nerve that was Pinkerton and does not feature a lot of super personal lyrics which Weezer fans have come to depend on, it is a fine fine rock album. I would say it's about 30 steps above every other album that will be released this year. It's already my #1 pick for Album of the year. A must listen.

the green album is an instant classic from the happiest band of all time. "photograph" is easily the best song on the album. all the songs are catchy and uplifting. you will not find any depressing, emo crap on this album. the first four tracks hit hard in a happy way, while the final songs have a nice, relaxing sound like "smile" and "glorious day" this album will make you feel good. it's a half an hour of pure fun. don't pass up the green album, you'll love it, guaranteed!!!!!!!
